3rd annual Women Making Waves Conference

The third annual Women Making Waves conference was held in Halifax at University of King’s College last weekend.  The conference is hosted by Women In Film and Television (Atlantic chapter).  With more than 100 participants, this conference has grown significantly since its inception and is a great way for local female filmmakers to attend workshops and network with other filmmakers from around the region and across the country.  ACTRA Toronto member Leah Pinsent spoke at one of the keynote panels Saturday morning, hosted by ACTRA Newfoundland and Labrador member Ruth Lawrence.  Leah entertained us with tales of starting out in the biz, including the story of how her father Gordon discouraged her from becoming a performer but then helped her land her first film role in “The Bad Boy,” filmed here in Nova Scotia!  She and Ruth also discussed the importance of telling our stories- Canadian stories- to the world and how important it is to have an indigenous film and TV industry here in Canada where we can share those stories.

Other workshops included master classes about cinematography, the role of the producer in today’s changing and challenging film environment, how to turn your book into a film, and putting your best pitch forward- how to interest potential producers, funders, etc. in your project.  ACTRA Maritimes members who attended the conference included Lisa Rose Snow, Kristen Howell, Shelley Thompson, Gay Hauser and Andrea Dymond.
